Driving with Hopp - Guidelines and Regulations

Safety, professionalism, and respect - every trip, every time.

Respect Pick-Up and Solicitation Rules

  • No Street Hails or Cabstands: Unlike taxis, ride hailing drivers are not permitted to pick up passengers from cabstands or in response to street hails. All rides must be pre-arranged through the authorized app platform.

  • Soliciting Rides: To ensure fairness and safety, offering rides directly to people on the street or through a third party (sometimes referred to as “runners”) is not allowed. All interactions with passengers should take place through the app.

  • Avoid Unlawful Activity: You must not knowingly transport individuals for the purpose of engaging in illegal activities, including solicitation for prostitution or other unlawful activity.

  • Remain Civil and Respectful: City regulations ask that all drivers maintain a high standard of behaviour. Courtesy, patience, and professionalism go a long way in building trust with riders and the public.

Follow Safety and Communication Protocols

  • Hands-Free Only: For everyone’s safety, mobile devices may only be used hands-free, and only when necessary. Communicating on a handheld device while a passenger is in the vehicle is only allowed in an emergency. All devices should be properly mounted and secured.

  • Cameras in Vehicles: If your vehicle is equipped with a camera that can record audio or video, you are required to clearly notify passengers that recording may occur. This notice must be posted visibly. This can be done with your Hopp notice of recording sticker.

  • Winter Tire Requirements: Between December 1 and April 30, all vehicles driving in Mississauga and Toronto must be equipped with snow tires or all-weather tires for safe winter driving.

  • No Smoking or Hookahs: Smoking of any kind (including hookahs) is prohibited in the vehicles by passengers or drivers.

  • No Alcohol: Consuming or appearing to be under the influence of alcohol while in charge of your vehicle is strictly forbidden.

Be Ready to Show Proper Documentation

Drivers must always carry and present the following documents upon request by Municipal Licensing and Standards (ML&S) officers:

  • A valid Ontario driver’s licence

  • Your PTC driver’s licence issued by the City of Toronto, if you are online in Toronto

    • Your PTC Licence can be found in the Driver Portal under My Documents
  • Hopp's City of Markham Operating Licence, if you are online in Markham

  • Proof of insurance for ride-share activity

    • A copy of Hopp's insurance policy can be found here
  • Your most recent mechanical safety inspection certificate for the vehicle

  • Evidence of a trip in progress or the last trip completed

Uphold Anti-Discrimination Standards

  • Respect for All Passengers: Discrimination of any kind is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or cultural background. All passengers must be treated with dignity and respect.

  • Service animals are always permitted: Passengers accompanied by a service animal must be allowed to travel with them. Denying service to a person with a service animal is not permitted under any circumstance.

Treat Fellow Drivers and the Public with Respect

  • Professional Interactions with Other Drivers: It’s important to contribute to a respectful and cooperative environment. Any form of retaliation, threats, or harmful conduct toward other drivers or individuals involved in regulatory matters is strictly prohibited.

  • Protecting Business Integrity: Drivers should refrain from any actions intended to financially harm other drivers or businesses, whether through misleading claims, interference, or intimidation.
